Beyond efficiency is a new paradigm for buildings in the tropics based upon new technologies and integrative designs. Radically re-thinking, re-assembling and re-designing buildings as systems offers new pathways of increased environmental performance and value creation at lower costs, while providing more comfort.

Talk within the series of lectures on SPACES OF CHANGE, hosted by FCL Module 6 – Territorial Organisation.

Thursday 25 April 2013, 12 noon.

Dr. Andreas Zangger, Historian (Amsterdam, NL)

Andreas Zangger gives a presentation on the prehistory of the Future Cities Lab in Singapore. He will talk about the history of the Swiss connections with colonial and postcolonial in Singapore and Indonesia. This comprises trade, plantations, and academia/technical co-operation. Switzerland never had colonies of its own. But as a highly industrialized and highly exporting country it has been dependent on access to colonial markets for commodities as well as an outlet. Singapore and the Netherlands East-Indies have been preferential access points to the colonial world. Andreas Zangger will give a general overview over the Swiss engagement in the region by presenting a photographic impression of the Swiss involvement. He will look at different stages and areas: 1) early trade relations, 2) the plantation business, 3) academic institutions, and 4) business involvement in Singapore after decolonisation.

The FCL lunch talk conducted by Luke Mitchell titled The Penang Project was held on Thursday 18 April 2013.

ABSTRACT:

In summer of 2011, Fundación Metrópoli began the Penang Project, a joint effort with Penang-based thinktank ThinkCity, on the transformative potential of the Penang conurbation, co-funded by the federal government of Malaysia. Penang is rapidly urbanizing, which brings productivity and growth in addition to complex environmental and social challenges. The research team took a holistic approach baseed on the Fundación Metrópoli’s Proyecto Cities methodology, to analyze the territory, engage local stakeholders, and, ultimately, to propose five transformative strategic projects.

SPEAKER’S BIO

Luke Mitchell (City Planner + Urban Designer) holds a Masters Degree in City Planning from the University of Pennsylvania, School of Design, and a Bachelors Degree in Geography and Sociology. He is the Coordinator of Asian Projects for Fundación Metrópoli, an organization based in Madrid working for the sustainable future of cities around the world. Luke has also held previous positions in city planning and geospatial research in the United States.

Jointly hosted by FCL Module 7 – Landscape Ecology and Module 9 – Simulation Platform, this talk will take place on Wednesday 24 April 2013, 3pm in the Value Lab Asia at the Singapore-ETH Centre (#06-01 Create Tower, NUS University Town).

Efficient LiDAR processing with LAStools by Dr Martin Isenburg, Scientist and Founder, rapidlasso GmbH

Dr. Isenburg received his PhD in 2004 from UNC Chapel Hill. He was first exposed to LiDAR as a post-doc at UC Berkeley constructing seamless Delaunay triangulations for billions of points. Dr. Isenburg is a vocal advocate of open LiDAR formats. He is a member of the LAS Working Group and provides the open-source LASzip compressor. His company rapidlasso GmbH licenses the popular LAStools LiDAR processing software.

In this talk, Dr. Isenburg will first present a hands-on talk on the technology in LAStools and how it can be used for efficient LiDAR processing at the example of recent projects. For example, LAStools were used in the Canary Islands to create canopy height maps, forest density grids, and bare-earth elevation rasters.

The processing results significantly improved the existing photogrammetrically derived topographic maps as the vegetation-penetrating lasers uncovered elevation differences of up to 25 meters between the official records and the real terrain - entire hills and valleys had been hiding under the canopy of the dense local pine forest.

Another on-going project to be covered is the DREAM-LiDAR project for creating a National Elevation Model for Flood Mapping purposes in the Philippines.

The FCL talk by Prof. Dr Oliver Deussen on Computer Graphics Modelling and Reconstruction of Tree Models was held on 11 April 2013 at the SEC. It was hosted by Assoc. Prof. Dr Joerg Rekittke, MLA Programme, Department of Architecture at NUS and affiliate FCL Module VII – Landscape Ecology

Prof. Dr. Oliver Deussen

Department of Computer and Information Science, University of Konstanz, Germany

About the talk

Today, computer graphics methods are able to create all kinds of visual effects and to simulate the light transport with high fidelity. The real challenge is to efficiently create, edit, store, render, and transmit the associated mass of data. In “Avatar” the geometric scene complexity was about one Billion surfaces for rendering an average frame.

Using the example of realistic plants and landscapes the modeling problem is discussed. Methods are shown that divide models into visually important aspects and procedurally generated details. Such representations are efficient, very compact, easy to modify, can interact with the environment and thus are especially well suited for computer graphics applications.

Though we do not aim at simulating such systems with high botanic fidelity, the results might serve as very efficient and interactive pre-simulation tools for many applications ranging from movies and computer games up to forestry, landscape and city design as well as Computational Biology.

About the speaker

Prof. Deussen graduated at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany in 1996 and was appointed as a professor for Computer Graphics and Media Design by Dresden University of Technology in 2000. Since 2003 he is professor for Computer Graphics and Media Informatics at Konstanz University. He is Visiting Professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Fellow of the Eurographics Association and Editor in Chief of Computer Graphics Forum. His areas of interest are modeling and rendering of complex objects, in particular botanic objects and landscapes, Non-photorealistic rendering as well as Information Visualization.
