Raffles’ Letters: Intrigues behind the Founding of Singapore reveals important insights into the Founding of Singapore in 1819 through 20 letters written by Sir Stamford Raffles.
On Saturday 19th FCL researchers visited the Exhibiton ‘Raffles Letters’ at the National Library. They were welcomed by curator Chen Sian Lim. Co-curator Dr. Kevin YL Tan guided the group. Dr. Tan talked about the exhibition concept and the process of collecting the maps, the highlight of which is a newly discovered planning map dated around 1820. Dr. Tan brought Singapore’s early colonial history to life with his enlightening and entertaining stories he and his colleagues had come across when reviewing the letters and tracing the relationship of statesmen and trade representatives active in South East Asia in the Early 19th century.
The exhibition is open to the public. For more details, visit http://raffles.nl.sg.
